The use of insulin for the treatment of type 1 diabetes has been unquestioned ever since its discovery in 1922. Before then, patients with type 1 diabetes invariably died within a year; soon after they could look forward to an almost normal lifespan. However, in type 2 diabetes the benefits of insulin are far less clear, and remain a source of controversy to this day.
