Frits Holleman is an associate professor of Medicine at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. While a generalist at heart, his research has focused on the clinical therapeutics of diabetes mellitus and specifically on the role of insulin analogues.
Dr. Holleman studied Medicine at the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands. He trained in Internal Medicine at the Diakonessen Hospital in Utrecht and the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. He subsequently completed his specialization as an endocrinologist at the Academic Medical Center.
Ever since writing his PhD thesis on the insulin analog insulin lispro, he has been involved in insulin analogue research, being the principal investigator for several national and international trials. More recently his research has shifted towards more fundamental topics such as the role of the gut microbiota and brown adipose tissue in human metabolism.
He is a member of the scientific advisory committee of the Dutch Diabetes Foundation and of the Dutch Diabetes General Practice Guideline Committee.
Dr. Holleman is fond of writing and (following an apprenticeship at the Diabetologia editorial office) is a regular reviewer for Diabetologia and several other journals. Since he believes that more effort should be put into the dissemination of knowledge gained, he is the co-founder and deputy-editor of the EASD Diapedia initiative, an online, ‘living’ textbook of diabetes
