The Charcot Foot

This page has now been adopted by William Jeffcoate and is under construction.

The acute Charcot foot (neuropathic osteoarthropathy) is a rare complication of distal symmetrical neuropathy. It is characterised by inflammation of the bones and soft tissues of the foot. The integrity of the bones and joints is vulnerable and the inflammation may lead to extensive disorganisation of the structure of foot, with deformity and secondary ulceration, and the limb may be lost.
